Answer My Tricky Questions

Here are a collection of questions and challenges often posed to Muslims along with what we hope are good responses:

Why Should I Investigate Islam?

Because if you fail to do so you could be sinning by deliberately keeping yourself ignorant. It’s a big sin in Islam. Even if other religions regard it as a virtue they are wrong and God will take you to account for not making proper use of the mind He gave you.

Why haven’t you done so yet?

Could it be that you have only ever got your information about Islam from the sensationalist media? Well maybe it’s time to take your information from somewhere else.

Could it be that you simply can’t be bothered to look into religion? Well maybe you are just generalising your negative impressions of religion without any good justification. All religions are not the same.

If you have any interest in the future of this planet you should find out about Islam. Islam is not only the fastest growing religion in the world but is now also the second largest religion in Europe and in the USA. Islam is the only serious alternative to the current amoral ideologies dominating the current world ‘order’ and it is to those who know about it the strongest moral force on Earth.

I suppose I believe in God but I don’t see any need to have a religion.

God provides us with the purpose of our existence and if we seek to do good it is the same as seeking to do the will of God. Your belief in God only has value in so far as you live your life according to His purpose for you.

How then do we know what is the will of God? That is where religion comes in. Allah has revealed His will through prophets. To find out what this is you need to study the revelation.

In Islam the core source of that revelation is the Qur’an – I recommend you read it.

You may be asking this question based on your understandings of what a religion is which are drawn from experiences of Christianity and other religions but don’t necessarily apply to Islam. So here are a couple of points which may help to correct such misunderstandings:

There is no church hierarchy in Islam

The very word “Islam” means submission to the will of God. Fulfilling your purpose in life given to you by God requires that you accept do exactly this. No other religion has such a clear and simple name which comes from the fact that:

Islam Is The Only Truly Universal Religion

What do think about Muslim terrorists?

If terrorism means bringing terror to a population, it is unislamic. It is unislamic because it brings about an extreme fear of people. To have such an intention has nothing to do with Islam. In Islam Muslims seek to instil in people a fear of God’s anger only and NOT of people.

There are some who hate that people should fear God’s anger only. They set themselves up as enemies of God and the Muslims. They may try to force people to fear something else. By doing so they are themselves at least mild terrorists. If they do so then Muslims have a duty to oppose this force – with force if necessary and if it will be effective and decisive. In this way only those who are themselves ‘terrorist’ have cause to fear the use of force by Muslims.

It is the complete incompatibility of only fearing God with fear of people which is referred to in verse 2:256 of the Qur’an:

Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out Clear from Error: whoever Rejects Evil and Believes In Allah hath grasped The Most trustworthy Handhold that never breaks.

The ignorant or the liars may stand up proclaiming that there is such a thing as an Islamic terrorist. There isn’t.

The Muslims don’t want you to fear them. They only hope that you will learn to devote your life to seeking Allah’s pleasure and fearing His displeasure.

Can you give an example of a clear act of terrorism?

What do you say about the World Trade Center attack?

What about the verses in the Qur’an about killing the infidels?

What has been happening in Algeria?

I am not an evil person. Would I be condemned to hell simply because I am not religious?

Throughout the history of humanity God has given guidance to peoples through prophets.

The sin of disbelief is when you shut out the possibility that Islam is genuine divine guidance to humanity even when provided with arguments & evidence that would convince any reasonable person. i.e. when your doubts keeping you from accepting Islam become unreasonable; when (as the Arabic word for a disbeliever literally means) you cover up what you know to be the truth.

This web site aims to provide you with such arguments and evidence. It is just a few clicks away…

OK then, convince me – why should I accept Islam?

I hate you self-righteous religious nuts!- Give me a break!

Righteousness comes only from good deeds.

All deeds are judged by intention.

Since only God knows what is in the hearts of human beings, only He can judge who is most righteous. I cannot judge you & you cannot judge me. There is no self righteousness in one who doesn’t judge them self as better than another.

What is Islam’s view of homosexuality?

There is no doubt that in Islam homosexuality is considered ’sinful’. Homosexuality as far as Islam is concerned is a profound mistake ( as are all sins if they are not intending to do wrong).

Humans are not homosexuals by nature. People become homosexuals because of their environments. Particularly critical is the environment during puberty. Suggestions, ideas & strange dreams are symptoms of confused attempts to understand new and blunt sexual desires and are rashly interpreted as defining someone as being one sexuality or another. If these conclusions are accompanied by actual homosexual acts they are even more strongly reinforced.

Human instincts can be subjected to acts of will. Sexuality is a choice of identity which follows choices of action which follow from choices of what to have sexual fantasies about. Human beings are especially able to control their thoughts, entertaining some and dismissing others.

However, if this free will is not recognised it is easy to get into a cycle of thinking which starts from accepting a hypothesis about yourself as true rather than as a possible choice (even if the options are sometimes difficult).

For example: “I am lazy ” could be supposed true by someone. When the person who thinks this lies around in bed in the morning he observes this inaction as evidence of the statement “I am lazy.” As he repeatedly chooses to do so the evidence mounts and the idea becomes fixed in his identity.

It may even have physical manifestations and change his physiology and psychology. This process can easily occur for any idea good or bad about the self which is based largely on evidence resulting from ones own action.

The idea may be “I am ‘gay’” or “I am content” or “I love eating lots of food”. The truth is – you are what you choose to be ; you do what you choose to do ; you think what you choose to think.

There may be long time delays between the causing choices and the effects but anyone can change themselves. There are reformed ex-drug addicts, reformed ex-compulsive gamblers and ex-homosexuals. In all these sins prevention is 1000 times better than cure and much easier.

It has been suggested that homosexuality is genetically inherited and that those who have this ‘predisposition’ are victims of it not sinners of any sort.

However, there are other things which are probably genetically influenced to give predispositions to for example gambling or alcoholism .It could also be argued (and has been) that it is programmed into men’s genetics for them to be unfaithful to their partner.

All these things don’t make it the right thing to do, nor does it prevent these things from being regarded as sinful. Drinking alcohol will still be regarded as sinful in Islam even if you have a predisposition to be an alcoholic.

The trick as every post alcoholic will tell you is never touch another drop after you quit – it is a long slippery slope – your life is better without it.

Once a certain desire is connected to your identity strongly and you get in some way hooked on it, it will always be easy to return to it – you are unable to forget the satisfaction. The difficult task is remembering the bad side of the desire, such as hangovers, lost money, self loathing or a simply sense of loss because of what you missed out on.

But if you are to change for the better, you must remember this and the past desires you bound up with your identity can become disconnected from what you choose to become.

The Islamic concept of sin

Why do you think that just because certain beliefs are right for you then they must be right for me too?

The perception in the Christian (or rather Post-Christian) world is that beliefs are matters which people accept without evidence or reason; an act of faith is to do something without reason or evidence to justify it.

What then makes anyone’s religious beliefs right for them? Well according to this understanding of ‘belief’, nothing or nearly nothing except perhaps that person’s own feelings about those beliefs.

With such an understanding of belief it of course seems like nothing more than a taste they have developed similar to liking tea rather than coffee.

Your statement amounts to saying I have no problem with anyone’s preference for Burger King over MacDonalds as long as they accept that just because they prefer the taste of a Whopper meal over a Bic Mac meal, that doesn’t necessarily mean Whopper meals are right for me.

This understanding of belief is quite alien to Islam. To understand why please read the section “OK then – Convince me!”

Faith is irrational and little better than superstition! I want to keep well clear of such things..

Superstition is the result of finding unreasonable causes and effects where none exist. Usually this

Belief in the almighty God doesn’t allow room to believe in superstitions. It is the ultimate dismissal of all superstition. Without this monotheistic belief then there may be any number of strange paranormal causes & effects which we don’t know about yet.

It could well be argued that monotheism is what made people look for God’s laws of nature instead of holding on to superstitions. This is indeed why we refer to ‘Laws of Nature’ – the law-maker and governor is God.

Superstition is where people attribute explanations for events which are based on flimsy evidence and flawed reasoning, if indeed reasoning occurs at all. Islam demands rigorous use of our mental faculties not their suspension.

Thinking of faith as being like superstition is quite alien to Islam. To understand why please read the section: “OK then – Convince me!”

Why are women oppressed in Islamic countries?

There is little point in discussing how well or badly so called ‘Islamic countries’ are living up to the teachings of Islam, or why. First it is necessary to clear up misunderstandings of what those teachings are.

Women are equal to men in the sight of God but they have in some respects different roles in life to men because of their different natures.

They differ psychologically, physiologically, and biologically from men. This makes them more suitable than men for certain responsibilities and less suitable than men for others.

Islam recognises these differences.

Oppression of women is the result of removing their rights. Islam gives men & women rights that are different in some aspects to those they have in the western world.

The principle difference in the way these rights came about is also important. In the West rights became part of the law only after women had been through great political struggles and also partly due to the necessity of women working in factories during wars.

It is possible that this will be reversed in the future. In Islam, rights were given ‘out of the blue’ by God through revelation. They cannot be reversed by anyone’s decision.

Most Muslims recognise the purity and validity of the Qur’anic laws even if they are not following them, but it may be necessary to struggle for a return to them from time to time. It is quite commonly agreed that all things in life which are worthwhile require some struggle.

There is considerable overlap of rights that now exist in the Western world and those which Muslim women have always had (at least in principle if not in practice). This link may give some examples:

Why do Muslim women have to cover their heads?

OK then. What are women’s rights in Islam?

Read a newspaper report ‘From behind the veil

Islam has no place in today’s world. It prescribes barbaric punishments and attitudes that belong to the middle ages!

Islam prescribes that it is the duty of the state to uphold the human rights of its inhabitants.

If people violate the rights of others, the victims of those violations have a right to take ‘an eye for an eye’, or ‘a tooth for a tooth’ or whatever compensation the transgressor is willing to give. However, it is more virtuous for the victim to forgive and forget, by such action God forgives and forgets some of the sins of the victim.

If the victims choose to claim their right, the state has a duty to enforce their claim. This is not barbaric it is justice.

Physical punishments can, therefore, be just. They can also be a better deterrent to crime & they are more equal towards the transgressors than fines (which the rich don’t feel as much as the poor) or imprisonment (which also punishes the taxpayers, the family & rarely reforms the criminal’s character).

You can think of the following situation: You see a man hit another man in the street and the other hits back. Is the second man committing a crime by retaliating?

Of course it may be better for him to do something else, but it is his right to respond with a similar measure against the aggressor.

Scientific facts have proven religious arguments and understandings of existence quite wrong!

There is no conflict between Islam and scientific fact.

In fact, apart from the historically interesting issue of the origins of the modern scientific approach being directly traceable to the Islamic world, there are descriptions in the Qur’an which confirm recent scientific findings to such a remarkable degree that it is considered by many to be one of the miraculous aspects of the Qur’an. For more information on what makes the Qur’an miraculous see:

How do you respond to what Christians say about Islam?

There is inevitably a fundamental difference between the way Muslims view Christianity and the way Christians view Islam.

Since Muhammad came after Christianity had become established the religion that came out of Muhammad’s mission viewed Christianity as in need of purifying because the teachings of Jesus had been distorted.

In contrast to this Christians are face with a choice. Either Islam is the true religion, Muhammad is a genuine prophet and the Christian should become a Muslim or Islam is a big lie and it must be fought in its entirety.

This difference in perspective means that Muslim criticism of Christianity is usually mild, concentrating on only those aspects of Christianity that it considers distortions of the teachings of Jesus, whereas Christian criticism of Islam tries to discredit any part of Islam that gives credibility to its message.

The situation is made more difficult for Trinitarian Christians because of the doctrine of salvation. For such people it is primarily the belief in the incarnation of God as a man that they believe guarantees their salvation.

Any doubt in this doctrine is tantamount to not really having this belief. and to ever entertain the possibility that Islam is the true religion is to entertain exactly this doubt.

This makes the choice much starker: considering the possibility that Islam is the true religion or fighting it.

Christian attacks on Islam date from the Crusades during which ‘Western culture’ found its first real sense of identity.

This identity was defined as being fundamentally hostile to Islam. Not Islam as it really is but a completely unapologetic pack of lies about Islam.

To mention such things may seem a bit strange because it is so far in the past. However, the level of ignorance about Islam continues to astonish and part of this ignorance is due to the persistence of this Christian reaction to Islam – to lie about it.

The type of lie has moved on of course because truth eventually prevails.

Although some Christians still use them, the charges that Muslims worship Al-Lut (a pre-Islamic pagan god for the moon), or that the use of the honorific title “we” in the Qur’an implies a plurality or trinity of God, or that Muslims are sexually promiscuous, or that Muhammad was the chief idol they worshipped are no longer even remotely tenable. The allegations made to try and discredit Islam these days focus on a number of things none of which stand up to any serious scrutiny.

I do not wish to imply that everyone who makes these allegations is a liar – this is certainly not the case.

Rather I suppose what typically happens is that some one is all too keen to find something vaguely discrediting and jumps to ignorant conclusions.

Either that or they deliberately hide something of what they know so as to present only half the picture. These allegations then get repeated without enough concern for investigating them properly at that stage.

I shall focus on a few categories of allegations to illustrate the point. The following links respond to allegations made on the “Answering Islam” website (see external links page).

There are internal contradictions in the Qur’an!

There are grammar mistakes in the Qur’an!

I feel obliged at this point to acknowledge the help of Abdel Haleem Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) London.

He has been very kind to help me in providing the answers to the points raised in the above links in particular the grammar points which I am not at all qualified to answer myself.

In response to the grammar points Professor Abdel Haleem suggests “The authors of this page should spend time learning Classical Arabic and Qur’anic stylistics (Asaaliib al-Bayaan) and they would perhaps not make such mistakes.”

The Brother of Ali

Aqueel arrived as a guest at the Government House in the days of the Caliphate of his brother, Imam Ali (A.S.). Imam Ali (A.S.) made a sign to his elder son Hassan al-Mujtaba (A.S.) to offer a garment to his uncle. Imam Hassan (A.S.) presented to him a robe and a cloak. The night came; the weather was warm. They were sitting on roof-top having amiable talks. It was time for dinner. Aqueel considered himself to be the guest of the Absolute ruler of the Muslim world and expected an extraordinarily colorful and rich dinner. But to his surprise it was the most ordinary and simple one. He said: “Is this all the food?”

Imam Ali (A.S.): “Isn’t it a God’s gift? I heartily thank Almighty God that he has bestowed me with this gift”.

Aqueel: “Then I should better tell you my needs at once, and be on my way soon. I am in debt. Please order to pay off my debt as soon as possible; and also help your poor brother as much as you can, so that I return to my place relieved of my burdens.”

“How much is your debt?”

“One hundred thousand Dirham.”

“Oh! One hundred thousand Dirham! So large? I am sorry, brother. I don’t have so much money to give you, but wait till the time comes for the disbursement of stipends. I shall withdraw my personal share and give from it to you, thus fulfilling my duty of cooperation and brotherhood towards you. If my family and children were not in need of their own expenses, I would have given you my entire share.”

“What! Should I wait till the payment of stipends? You have the state-treasury in your hand and still you are asking me to wait till the time of disbursement and then only you will give me from your personal share! You can withdraw any amount you want from the State Treasury. So, why are you making me wait till then? Besides, what is your total share from it? Even if you give me the your entire share, how far will it relieve me of my trouble?”

“I am surprised to hear your proposal. What concern it does it, is of you or me whether there is money in the Treasury or not? We are just like any other Muslims. True, you are my brother and I must help you as much as possible, but from my personal money, not from the public treasury.”

The argument continued and Aqueel pleaded with Imam Ali (A.S.) in various ways. He continued to insist that Imam Ali (A.S.) should give him from state treasury. The place where they were sitting overlooked the market of Kufa, and they could see the cash-boxes of the shop-keepers. Imam Ali (A.S.) said, “If you still insist and are not ready to listen to me, then I have got another proposal for you. If you follow it you can repay all your loan and still have plenty of money left.”

“What is that?”

“Down over there are cash-boxes. As soon as the market is closed and nobody is there, go down and break open the boxes. And take whatever you want.”

“Whose boxes are they?”

“They belong to the people of this market. They keep their cash in them.”

“Strange! You are telling me to steal the money of poor people who have earned it with their hard labor and have gone home leaving it there trusting in God?”

“Then why are you urging me to open the boxes of the state-treasury for you? Whom does it belong to? This also belongs to the same people who are asleep in their houses carefree and in comforts. All right, I have another suggestion. Follow it if you like.”

“What’s that?”

“If you are ready then pick up your sword and so will do I. The old city of Hirah is not far from here. There are leading merchants and wealthy people there. We make a surprise attack on one of them during night and bring out enormous wealth with us.”

“Brother, I haven’t come here for theft and robbery that you are suggesting these things to me. I am only asking you to instruct the officials of the treasury to give me the money which is in your power, so that I may repay my debt.”

“Suppose that we steal the property of an individual, isn’t it better that stealing from the property of millions of Muslims? How is it that taking the property of an individual with sword is robbery, and usurping the property of the general public is not? You are under the impression that robbery only means attacking some individual and taking his property by force. The worst type of robbery is the same thing which you are proposing to me to do now.”

The Stranger

Tired and exhausted with the water-skin on her back, she was gasping and going towards her house where innocent children, their eyes fixed at the door, were eagerly waiting for the arrival of their mother. On her way, an unknown man approached her. He took the water-skin from her and placed it on his back. The door opened and the children saw their mother entering the house with a stranger. He placed the water-skin on the ground and said:

“Well, it seems you don’t have anyone to fetch water for you; how come you are so forlorn?”

“My husband was a soldier; Ali sent him to the frontier where he was killed. Now I am alone with these small children.”

The stranger said no more. Bowing down his head he went away. But the thought of the helpless window and orphans remained in his mind. He could hardly sleep in the night. Early in the morning he picked up a basket; put some meat, flour and dates in it; went straight to her house and knocked at the door.

“Who are you?”

“I am the man who brought your water yesterday. Now I have brought some food for the children.”

“May God bless you and judge between us and Ali”

She opened the door. Entering the house he said:

“I wish to do some good acts. Either let me knead the flour and bake the bread or allow me to look after the children.”

“Very well, but I can do the job of kneading and cooking better than you. You take care of the children till I finish cooking”.

She went to knead the flour. Immediately he grilled some meat, which he had brought and fed the children saying to each child while putting morsel in his mouth:

“My son, forgive Ali if he has failed in his duty towards you”

The flour got ready; she called: “Gentlemen! put fire in the oven”. He went and put fire in the oven. When flames rose up, he brought his face near the fire and said, “Taste the heat of fire. It is the punishment for those who fail in their duty towards orphans and widows.”

By chance, a woman from the neighboring house came in. Recognizing the stranger, she cried: “Woe, don’t you recognize the man who is helping you? He is Ameer-ul-Momineen (commander of the faithful) Ali Ibn Abi-Talib.”

The widow came forward and shamefacedly cried: “Curse and shame to me. I beg your pardon.”

“No, I beg your pardon for I failed in my duty towards you.”

The Shop Keeper

A heavy-built man was passing through the market of Kufa, his step was firm and assured. He had a fine physique and sun-burnt face; encounters of the battle-field had left their marks on him and the corner of one of his eyes was slit. A shop-keeper, to amuse his friends, threw a handful of sweepings onto the man. The man continued his walk in the same assured and firm manner, without raising an eye-brow or looking towards the shop-keeper. When he went away, a friend of the shop-keeper said:

“Do you know who the man is whom you have insulted just now?”

“No, I do not recognize him. He was a passer by like thousands of people passing this way every day. But tell me who this man is.”

“Strange! Didn’t you recognize him? He was Malik Ashtar, the renowned commander-in-chief of Imam Ali.”

“Strange! He was Malik Ashtar! The same Malik whose bravery turns the heart of lions into water and mention of whose name makes his enemies tremble with fear?”

“Yes, that was Malik himself.”

“Woe to me! What did I do? Now he will give orders to punish me severely. I must run to him immediately to apologize and request him to forgive my misbehavior.”

He ran after Malik. He saw him turning towards a mosque. He followed him to the mosque and saw that he had started praying. He waited till he finished his prayer. Humbly introducing himself he told him:

“I am the man who had committed the silly prank and behaved disrespectfully to you.”

Malik said: “By Allah, I did not come in the mosque but for your sake, because I understood that you were a very ignorant and misguided man and that you give trouble to the people without any reason.

I felt pity on you and came here to pray for you and ask Allah to guide you onto the right path. No, I did not have any such intentions that you were afraid of.”

Prophet Ibrahim

During the olden times, people everywhere used to carve stones and make idols for worship. These statues were considered as gods, and people bowed and prayed before them. Namrud, the King of Babylonia, was once informed by his astrologers that someone was going to be born who would destroy his kingdom. He would teach people another religious concept: that of worshipping none but only one God.

On hearing that, Namrud gave orders that no woman would conceive, hence no child would be born in his kingdom. If any child was born, it would be killed immediately. The mother of Prophet Ibrahim became pregnant. But by the will of Allah, no sign of pregnancy was to be seen. When the time of birth of the child came nearer, she went out of the town and hid in a cave. There, Prophet Ibrahim was born. She then covered the child with a cloth, closed the mouth of the cave with stones and returned home without the child. She told nobody of what had happened.

The child was alone in the cave with no one to care for him. He was sucking the milk which flowed of his fingers – by the grace of Almighty God. The child grew up under Allah’s protection. From time to time, his mother would come secretly to the cave to watch him. This went on for thirteen years. On one occasion when the mother visited the son, he beseeched her to take him out of the cave. The mother warned that he would be killed by the King it he came to know about him. But the child insisted that he be brought out of the cave as 13 years had been a long time.

Thus Prophet Ibrahim came out of the cave for the first time. It was late in the evening when the sun was setting. When the night grew dark, he saw a star and he said, “Is this my Lord?” But when it set, he said, “I love not the setting ones.” Then, when he saw the moon rising he said: “Is this my Lord?” But when it set, he said, “If my Lord had not guided me I would have certainly been among the mistaken ones. Then he saw the sun rising and said, “Is this my Lord?” Is this the greatest?”. But when it also set, he said, “O, my people! Surely. I am clear of what you set up with Allah. Surely, I have turned myself wholly to the One Who created the heavens and the earth. I am not of the ones who believe and worship anything else other than Allah – the one God.

The people, at that time were not only idol-worshippers but they were also worshipping the stars, the sun, the moon etc. All the time, he was making them realize their error in their choice of ‘gods’. He was showing his people what they called a god, did not deserve to be called god and worshipped if it disappeared at times. So Prophet Ibrahim started preaching the belief of One God and persuading his people not to worship anything else but Allah, the one and only God.

Once, it was the time of annual festival in the town and according to their custom, Namrud, the King, went out of town with all his people to celebrate the day. Prophet Ibrahim did not accompany them but stayed behind. He went to the temple where all the idols were kept, and broke all of them one by one. He left the biggest idol untouched, but put the axe on its shoulder.

When the King and his people returned they were very angry to see their idols destroyed. He said that he would kill the person who had caused that damage. The people told him that it must be a young man, named Ibrahim who always preached against the worship of idols. He must have destroyed them.

When Prophet Ibrahim was asked if it was he who broke the idols. He replied, “Why do you not ask the chief (of the idols) who is standing safe. Perhaps he has done it, that is if your idol gods can speak, ask them as to who broke them.” Thus Prophet Ibrahim did not utter a lie denying what he had done. He only wanted the people to first ask their own idols as to who had done it?

Namrud got very angry and asked his people their opinion. Every one suggested that Prophet Ibrahim be punished by burning him alive in a big fire.

So, Prophet Ibrahim was jailed, while Namrud ordered that all available firewood in the forest be collected and be heaped up in one open place. When this was done, it was set alight. The fire burnt fiercely and widely for days and days. It had generated so much heat that no bird dared to fly nearby. At the appointed day on which Prophet Ibrahim was to be put in the fire and burnt, Namrud with his large army and followers came out to that place to watch. On seeing the huge fire and the intense heat, he began to ponder as to how it would be possible to convey Prophet Ibrahim into the fire. Suddenly Satan, the devil, came and suggested that a type of a crane be prepared which could be used to hurl Prophet Ibrahim into the fire. This would cut out the need of any assistance of human hands to do the risky job of delivering the Prophet into the raging fire.

The crane was constructed and Prophet Ibrahim was lifted and readied to be dumped into the fire. On seeing this tragic happening. the angels in the heaven and all the creatures in the sky became deeply upset. Taking permission from Almighty Allah, one by one, they all came to Prophet Ibrahim to inquire if they could be of any help to him. The Prophet said that he was seeking help and protection from none of them. The one from whom he expected help (that is Almighty Allah), was fully aware of the dangerous situation in which he was and would help him if need be.

Just then, the angel, Jibrail came to the Prophet and gave him a ring on which the following was inscribed (written):

“There is no God but Allah”

“Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah”

“I depend and rely upon Allah”

“I submit my affair to the will of Allah.”

Prophet Ibrahim put the holy ring on his finger and the grace and blessing of Allah began to be showered upon him. Then came the command from Allah, “O fire! Be nothing but coolness and peace for Ibrahim.”

Thus the burning fire instantly lost its heat and no harm came to the Prophet.

It is related that when Prophet Ibrahim was being thrown into the fire, the angels in the heaven and the birds in the air cried in protest. One of them, a small weak bird decided to burn itself along with the Prophet. As it was flying towards the fire, the angel Jibrail was sent by Allah to inquire the reason why it was going to commit suicide! The angel stopped the bird on the ground and asked it to explain its strange action – that of trying to burn itself along with Prophet Ibrahim. The bird said: “Don’t you know that the friend of God is to be burnt in the fire? As it is not within my strength to save him, I am showing my sorrow and sympathy by accompanying him into the fire!”

The angel conveyed this incident to Allah. Then came a command from Allah to tell the bird that it would be rewarded for its sincere feeling shown for the Prophet. It was asked what it wished to have so that the wish be fulfilled. The bird in reply said: “I do not wish to have anything from this world. All I wish is to constantly remember Allah in prayer. There are a thousand and one names of Allah. I know hardly a hundred names. I wish to be taught the remaining names. Almighty Allah fulfilled its desire. As it flew from tree to tree, it went on singing the names of Allah, thus remembering Him day and night.

To respect and sympathies with the friends of Allah; to remember Allah constantly in prayer is better than fulfilling worldly desires. This is what the little weak bird has shown to us. These are the acts of virtue which would one day undoubtedly earn great rewards from Allah.

Hercules & Islam

Arabia, during the time of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s), was a country without any central authority. It was a country far from the civilized nations of those days.

At the time Prophet Muhammad (s) was spreading Islam; asking people to turn away from worshipping idols to worshipping Allah, the Almighty, the All-Knower, the Master.

The Prophet sent letters of invitation to Kings and Rulers of various countries in the world, inviting them to embrace Islam. Many of the letters were met with a favorable response whilst others were rejected. In many cases, the messengers of the Prophet were badly treated and abused. But the Prophet was not worried by these setbacks. He was inviting people to the right path and a few setbacks could not deter him from propagating Islam.

Abu Sufyan a leader of the tribe of Quraish and the arch enemy of the Prophet was in Constantinople on a business trip, when the Prophet’s letter of invitation reached Hercules, the Byzantine emperor of Eastern Roman Empire. Hercules, at the time was in his court at Constantinople celebrating his victory over the Persians.

Hercules read the letter through an interpreter and then asked the people in his court, to find out if there was someone in the city, who knew the Prophet. Abu Sufyan with his companions was brought into the court.

The emperor asked Abu Sufyan, “What kind of family does Muhammad belong to?”

“Noble”, replied Abu Sufyan

“Has there been a king in his family?” Hercules asked.

“No,” said Abu Sufyan

“Are the people who have accepted his religion poor or rich?”, Hercules questioned again.

“They are poor”, replied Abu Sufyan.

Hercules was now becoming more and more interested and he went on asking questions.

His next question was, “Are his followers on the increase or decrease?”

“Increasing”, Abu Sufyan replied shortly.

“Have you known him to tell lies”? asked Hercules.

“No”, admitted Abu Sufyan.

“Does he ever go against his convents?”, Hercules once again asked.

“Not so far. But we have to see whether he carries out the new agreement made between us and him”, Abu Sufyan answered lengthily for a change.

“Have you ever fought him in wars?” Hercules questioned.

“Yes”, answered Abu Sufyan

“What has been the result?” Hercules asked, getting more and more interested.

“Sometimes we have won, sometimes he”, replied Abu Sufyan.

“What does he teach?” asked Hercules

“Worship One God, join no partners with Him, carry out your prayers, be chaste, speak the truth and keep union with your relatives”, answered Abu Sufyan, even surprised at his own answer as it sounded like he was preaching Islam.

Hercules stood up and said, “If all you said is true, then I am sure that this Prophet’s Kingdom will reach here where I am standing. I was certain that a Prophet was coming, but I didn’t know that he would be born in Arabia. If I were to go there, I would embrace Islam and wash the Prophet’s feet with my own hands.”

This was the way in which the Prophet spread Islam. He impressed them by his truthfulness, honesty, noble character and dedication in the service of Allah. He did not compel people to accept Islam under threat of waging wars, nor did he compel people to accept Islam by the force of the sword. He fought only in defense, and only when the enemies waged war on him.

The Trustworthy

It had rained heavily and continuously for a long period, and the water poured down towards the Holy Ka’aba in Masjid-ul-Haram, the big mosque in Mecca, The Ka’aba was in the lower section of Mecca. It had become old and collapsed.

So the rebuilding was started. The work progressed well enough until al-Hajar-ul-Aswad, the Black Stone, was to be put back in its place.

Each quarter of the Ka’aba was being built by one leading family of Quraish – the big and prominent tribe of Mecca. Each family of Quraish felt the honor of placing the Black Stone belonging to it.

The disagreement became deeper, and led to a lot of argument, shouting and abuse. The members of each big family were thinking that a war was going to break out, None of them was willing to change his position. They regarded it as a great insult if they didn’t have that special honor of putting the Black Stone back in its place.

One member stood up and said, “I have a suggestion, let us wait till tomorrow and see who enters the Masjid-ul-Haram first in the morning; then let him decide”. All agreed, since that sounded like a good suggestion.

They anxiously waited next morning to see who was the first to come and enter Ka’aba. Suddenly they heard footsteps heading towards them. It was Muhammad (s), the son of Abdullah. Everyone, of course, knew, loved, admired and respected Muhammad (s). So with a loud voice, everyone said, “Here comes Al-Amin” and the voice echoed through the place over and over again.

He was surprised to hear of that title with which they called him. He was told about what the people of Quraish were fighting for. It was all silent for a while. Everyone thought his family was going to be favored. Their hearts were beating hard and they were getting anxious and impatient.

Muhammad (s) put his robe on the floor, took the sacred Black Stone and put it in the centre of the robe and said. “The chief of each family will take one corner of the robe and lift it together”. With that, each understood a marvelous example of justice in sharing the honor. It showed how Muhammad’s intelligence far exceeded those around him. It also showed his great capacity to solve difficult problems with such ease.

When the robe with the Black Stone was lifted to a reasonable height. Muhammad (s) took the Black Stone and put it in its proper place by his own hands. None felt insulted and each had his share of the privilege and honor.

This is how Muhammad (s) the Prophet of Islam succeeded in uniting the ever-fighting and ignorant Arabs with his honesty, justice and noble character.

Prophet Sulayman

For the guidance of mankind, Allah honored four famous Prophets by revealing to them four Holy Books as under:

1) Taurat to Prophet Musa (Moses):

2) Zaboor (Psalms) To Prophet Dawood (David);

3) Injeel (Evangel) To Prophet Isa (Jesus);

4) Qur’an To Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (s).

The commandments of Allah are contained in these books. The first three books were for the earlier times. The Holy Qur’an is the last book of God and is for the guidance of entire mankind till the Day of Judgment.

Prophet Dawood eventually became King of his people. He had 19 sons. Each of them hoped to inherit the father’s throne. Allah revealed to Prophet Dawood a few questions and their answers and commanded him to put the questions to each one of his sons. Whosoever answered those questions correctly, would inherit the throne of the father, Prophet Dawood.

One day Prophet Dawood called all his sons in the presence of the scholars and the chiefs of the tribes of his kingdom. He then put forward the following questions:

1) Which thing is closest (nearest) to man?

2) Which is the farthest thing?

3) Which two things are attached to each other?

4) Which is the most awe-creating thing?

5, Which two things remain unchanged?

6) Which two things are always different?

7) Which two things are opposed to each other?

8) What is the action the result of which is good?

9) What is that action the result of which is bad?

The sons of Prophet Dawood felt helpless and could not answer any of these questions. Then the youngest of the sons, Prophet Sulayman (Solomon) stood up and gave the following answers:

  1. The nearest things to a man is the hereafter (Life and Death – as one may die any moment);
  2. The farthest things is the time which has passed away (which is not to come again);
  3. The two things that are attached to each other is man’s body with the soul;
  4. The most awe-creating is the man’s body (dead) without soul;
  5. The two things which remain the same are the sky and the earth;
  6. The two things which are different are the day and night;
  7. The two things which are opposed to each other are life and death;
  8. The action – the end of which is good – is patience and forbearance at the time of anger;
  9. The action – the end of which is bad is haste at the time of anger.

Prophet Dawood obviously, was very much impressed with these correct answers and appointed Prophet Sulayman as his successor.

Thus it will be seen that it was the supreme knowledge and understanding that made Prophet Sulayman succeed his father and become the Great King Prophet.

Refuge in Ethopia

When the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s) began to preach religion of Islam in Mecca, those who did not believe in him and his message, opposed and troubled him. They called him a lunatic and a sorcerer. They offered bribes to persuade him to stop preaching the religion. When all these ways failed, they used harsh threats against the Prophet and the new Muslim converts.

During all these years, the Holy Prophet enjoyed the protection of his uncle Abu Talib. He always stood by his nephew and did not let anyone harm him. The sons of Abu Talib, one by one, accepted Islam. Imam Ali (a) was right, from his childhood, under the care of the Prophet and was the first one to declare his true faith, Islam, when the Prophet proclaimed his Prophethood. He always stood by the Prophet firmly and faithfully both in good and difficult times. Among the other sons of Abu Talib (a), Ja’far also accepted Islam and so did Aqeel, the other son of Abu Talib.

The torture and oppression which the Holy Prophet and the small group of his followers had been subjected to, had increased so much that life became unbearable. The Holy Prophet decided on an action which not only saved the lives of his followers but also spread the message of Islam to other countries. He therefore, decided to send some of his followers to Abyssinia, which was just across the Red Sea, to the south of Mecca.

The Holy Prophet had great faith in Ja’far the son of Abu Talib (a) and brother of Imam Ali (a). A handful of Muslim refugees including men and women under the leadership of Ja’far crossed the Red Sea. This is known to be the first migration in the history of Islam, which occurred in the fifth year after the Prophet had proclaimed Islam in 615 A.D. They were joined by more immigrants who had become the victims of the enemies of Islam. The number of the refugees rose to eighty-two men and eighteen women.

On arrival at the capital of Abyssinia, Ja’far and his companions paid a visit to the Emperor Negus. The Emperor was very much impressed with the knowledge, behavior and the politeness of Ja’far and he received him with much honor and entertained him as a respected guest.

When the non-believers of Quraish in Mecca came to know of this, Abdullah Bin Rabih and Amr Bin ‘Aas together with some other people took some expensive gifts and arrived at the court of the Emperor Negus. On entering the court, they prostrated (bowed in sajda before the Emperor and presented him with the gifts. Then they said, “Someone in our country has invented a new religion and some people have joined him. We tried to stop this, but some of his followers have taken refuge in your country. Now, we appeal to you to throw them out and hand them over to us.” The Emperor replied that he had already given protection to them and would not throw them out of the country, but he would ask them to come there before them. So saying, the Emperor called in the Muslim refugees.

Hazrat Ja’far took with him some close companions and arrived at the court. But he did not prostrate (bow in sajda) before Negus. People in the court criticized him for this and asked him why he had not bowed down before the Emperor as was customary. Hazrat Ja’far promptly retorted, “We do not bow down before anybody except God. The Emperor knew that this was the true and basic teaching of divine religions. He called Ja’far and gave a respectful place near him. He then informed Ja’far that some people from his country of origin had come there with a complaint that he had deserted his old religion and started a new one which rejected the original idol-worship. Hazrat Ja’far in very impressive language, replied:

“O King! We were in deep ignorance and barbarism: we adored idols, we lived in unchastity; we ate dead animals, we disregarded the duties of hospitality and neighborhood; At that time, God raised among us a man, who is pure, truthful and honest. He called us to believe in One God and taught us not to associate anything with Him. He forbade us to worship idols, enjoined us to speak the truth, to be faithful to our trusts, to be merciful and to regard the rights of neighbors. He forbade us to speak evil of women. He ordered us to keep away from vices, to offer prayers, to pay alms and to observe the fast.”

Negus told Ja’far to recite some words from the Holy Qur’an. Ja’fer commenced with Bismillah and proceeded to recite a few lines from Surah Maryam with such sincerity and sweet voice that the Emperor and his people were very much moved and began to weep. When the Emperor heard the verse concerning Prophet Isa (Jesus), he was very touched and said that the words resembled those which were bestowed upon Prophet Musa (Moses) and Prophet Isa (Jesus).

The Emperor rejected the appeal of the Quraish and ordered Amr bin ‘Aas to take away the gifts he had brought. Amr bin ‘Aas went away but having thought of something, he returned to the court the next day. He made a cunning move by suggesting to the Emperor to ask the Muslims as to what their belief was concerning Prophet Isa? Hazrat Ja’fer was called to the court again and was given a very respectful welcome. The Emperor then asked: “What does your Prophet (Muhammad) say about Prophet Isa (Jesus)?’

The Muslims became worried but Hazrat Ja’far, with great peace of mind, replied: “O King! Our Prophet is guided by God in what he says.” Saying this, he proceeded to show an Ayat from the Holy Qur’an and requested Negus to read it: “The messiah (Isa), son of Maryam is only a messenger of Allah and His word and His spirit which He sent to Maryam.”

Negus was extremely pleased to learn this and said: “This actually is also there in our book of Injil.” He then expelled Amr bin ‘Aas and the infidels of Quraish from Abyssinia. From then onwards, Negus had high regard for and faith in Islam.

Thus Ja’far had done a great service to Islam. He preached the true message of Islam in Abyssinia and stayed there for fifteen years before returning to Medina.

Doing Good Deeds Even After Ramadan

Doing Good Deeds Even After Ramadan

One should continue to perform acts of worship after Ramadan to prevent sudden emptiness of the soul.

The rapid shift from obeying Allah Almighty in Ramadan to disobeying Him and moving away from His way after Ramadan has its reasons, the most important of which are the following:

• Absence or lack of sincerity during the acts of worship that used to be performed: This insincerity is exemplified in the person who performs prayer or pays charity so that people will see him. In doing so, he may achieve a certain rank, some material benefit from them, or the like. Such a person does not perform acts of worship with the intention of pleasing Allah Almighty, and achieving a great reward in the Hereafter.

• Absence of concentration during the performance of the acts of worship despite the presence of sincerity: This leads to the person not benefiting from performing such acts, not filling the heart with faith and not drawing his heart closer to his Lord, a thing which would have prompted him to persist in doing good and abandoning evil.

• Lack of moderation in acts of worship, being over enthusiastic and exerting much effort than that which each person can bear: This makes the soul change afterwards because it does not possess the quality of persistence. This happens although the Messenger (Pbuh) ordered us to do those deeds which are within our capabilities.

• Weakness of the soul and its yielding to the insinuations of the devil: This occurs because of the absence of good company, or the companionship of bad people who one is unable to affect, so one is affected by it instead. Another reason is abandoning acts of worship suddenly, therefore, one’s soul becomes empty and likely to be filled with devilish insinuations and love of committing acts of disobedience.

• The soul’s need for recreation after periods of patience in Ramadan: This makes it seek the utmost enjoyment, as compensation for what it has missed. So it indulges in pleasure until it surpasses the wide range of the lawful and enters into the unlawful.

In order to cure this shift, which may afflict some people in different degrees that vary from one person to another in degree and form, one has to apply the following means, the most of which are in fact the opposite of the above reasons:

• Gradual training to be sincere when performing every act: Each act should only be performed with the intention to please Allah Almighty, to gain His reward, and to benefit from it by enjoying happiness in this world and reward in the Hereafter. This can be achieved through hiding the act as much as possible, not mentioning it afterwards, and bearing good intentions while doing it.

• Gradual training on concentration during the different acts of worship through not performing too many acts and being moderate: What is important, for example, is not reading too many chapters of the Qur’an, but rather it is enough to read some verses with contemplation followed by practising what is understood. Furthermore, repeating one or two of the supplications of remembering Allah with due contemplation that moves the heart, is much better than repeating many supplications without gaining any benefit, and so on.

• Looking for good company like that which was available in Ramadan, merging with it, and clinging to it, for it serves as a shield against devilish insinuations. Keeping good company supports you to continue in obedience

• Avoidance of sudden slackness after Ramadan or abandoning the acts of obedience: One should continue to perform acts of worship after Ramadan even in a lesser form. Some rakahs of optional night prayer, some prayers in the Mosque, reciting some verses of the Qur’an, paying some charity, and doing other acts of obedience that used to be observed during the honourable month would prevent sudden emptiness in the soul.

Fasting Six Days of Shawwal

It is highly recommended to fast six days of the month of Shawwal, as this is a meritorious act which results in abundant reward. However, it is not required to fast six days continuously without any interruption. One can fast according to convenience any time during the month.

It is certainly wrong to suggest that one must rest for three days to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr as the Eid is for one day. The six days of Shawwal fast can, therefore, begin right after Eid, i.e., on the second day of Shawwal. As a matter of fact, that is the position of many scholars. The Prophet (Pbuh) is reported to have said, “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan, and then follows it up by (fasting) six days of Shawwal, it is as though he has fasted the whole year.”

However, there are other scholars who do not consider it absolutely necessary to begin the optional fasting of six days of Shawwal immediately after Eid-ul-Fitr. According to them, one may fast any of the six days of Shawwal. Neither do they consider it necessary for a person to fast the six days consecutively. So long as one has fasted six days either consecutively or separately, he has fulfilled the requirement and he will receive the same rewards.

Both of the above cited views have been transmitted from reliable authorities of Fiqh. It is, therefore, simply a matter of interpretation. Since there is nothing in the sources explicitly stating that it must be done immediately after Eid or that it must be done consecutively, it must be judged as being flexible.

Here a Little Story

In the Land of Lost Eids

The pageantry of Eid celebrations in the Muslim world is largely absent in  Eid festivities.

Once upon a time in America, five Muslim brothers – Mahbub, Osama, Ali, Saleh and Bashir – got together to celebrate the Eid. It was an impromptu affair organised hastily shortly after the end of the Eid prayer. The two brothers who hosted the affair – Mahbub and Ali – had contemplated inviting friends to their apartment a few days earlier, but had never got around to the actual planning. Nevertheless, upon returning from the Eid prayer, they decided that they would indeed entertain company and went about the task of calling several friends.

Most of those who were called were unable to accept the invitation at such short notice. Undaunted however, Mahbub and Ali resolved to make their small Eid party worth the while for the handful of people who did come.

While Mahbub cleaned their apartment Ali went to a local halal restaurant to get food. He didn’t purchase very much – just two roasted chickens, some basmati rice, some salad greens and some sweets. It was by no means a feast. It was simply a meal purchased on a student’s budget for a few friends who had no expectations of an extravagant evening of dining and entertainment.

Saleh, Osama, and Bashir joined Mahbub and Ali later that afternoon. They sat on the floor with the food laid out before them on pieces of old newspaper. They talked, they ate, they joked, they laughed. They discussed Islam and issues important to Muslims at the time. When it was time to pray, they prayed. They enjoyed one another’s company for the better part of an entire afternoon.

To this very day some of those brothers who attended that small Eid gathering insist that it was one of the best Eids ever. Though there were only two chickens, roasted very simply, some brothers seem to remember that day as if it were a magnificent feast. And although the conversation lasted only a few hours, some brothers recall talking all day long and into the night, laughing as they never had before.

There was no television that day, no movies, no music. There were absolutely no external entertainment factors. The only entertainment that happened that day was a result of what those five brothers brought into that apartment.

With another Eid will come and go, millions of Muslims celebrate in their own peculiar fashions.

And although the pageantry of Eid celebrations in the Muslim world is largely absent in  Eid festivities, the Eid is celebrated nonetheless. And throughout this new land of Islam, groups of five brothers or sisters gather together and enjoy entertainment like they never have before. We should all be so lucky.

The Place where she was lamenting was an attic occupied by her in the grave yard at Jannatul Baqi. At this place after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S.) Janab Um ul Baneen wife of Amir ul Momeneen Ali Ibne Abi Taleb (A.S.) and the mother of Janab Abbas used to lament over Imam Hussain (A.S.) in a heartrending manner. It was here that the citizens of Medina used together to join in the wailings. Hazrat Rabab, wife of Imam Hussian (A.S.) also frequented this place to cry. Janab-e-Zainab and Umm-e-Kulsoom were also among the regular mourners. This place is popularly known as Baitul Huzn. Its original name was Baitul Ahzaan (The house of mourning).
