Eid Ul Adha Mubarak

Warm felicitations to all Muslims of the world

specially the followers of Ahlalbayt (a.s.) on

the happy occasion of Eid –ul Azha

Our Brethern In faith knows that faith is the supreme support, the force and the pillar of Character. The two activities - bidding to do good and forbidding evil - results from faith.

Idd-ul-Azha ( Baquar’id or Bakrid ) .is the commemoration of the noble example of faith in the Divine Will and supplication to it to the extent of annihilating oneself, set by Abraham ( Ibrahim ), an Apostle of Allah.

On Zilhaj 10, all Muslims who can afford, converge on the holy city of

Mecca to perform Haj . It is inclumbent upon them, and on every Muslims who can

afford, to slaughter a five-year-old defect-free camel or a one - year - old cow

or he - goat or a six - month - old she goat, sheep or ewe in sacrifice for remembering sacrifice of hazrath Ibrahim. sacrifice of ibrahim is so important where he during his visits to his

family on the ninth night of Zilhaj, had a dream - a source of communion between God and his Apostles in which he found himself slaughtering his son Ismail. Abraham took the dream as the command of God and set out to - execute it. But, there was a surprise in store for Abraham -he his son Ismail alive and a sheep lying slaughtered in his place.

Idd-ul-Azha

( Baquar’id or Bakrid ) Mubarak To All Momin

and Mominaat.

The Night Of 10th (shab e 10th) is a highly blessed night. It is desirable to remain awake, pray dua’as and invoke Allah for blessings and forgiveness. Recite Ziyarath e imam husain(a.s) and ziyarath e Jamea third and dua e NUDBAH. “Nothing is better than namaz to make shaitan bite the dust, then perform namaz and make Shaitan bite the dust”. (Bihar 53/182).

“The thanks giving prostration is amongst the most necessary and obligatory Sunnah”. (Bihar 53 - 161).

Eid ul-Adha is second in the series of Eid festivals that Muslims celebrate across the world. It is also referred to as the “Big Bayram” (from Turkish) or “Big Feast.” Eid ul-Adha is known as Hari Raya Haji in Singapore and Malaysia, and Tabaski in West Africa. In India, the animal used most often for sacrifice is the goat - which is why the occasion is spoken of in Urdu language as Bakrid or Eid-e-Qurban.

On this day Muslims sacrifice animals which have been deemed Halaal, or fit for sacrifice. They not only eat the meat themselves but distribute it amongst their neighbors, relatives and the poor and hungry.

It is celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja of the lunar Islamic calendar, after Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Makkah in Saudi Arabia. The underlying flavor is the spirit of sacrifice or Qurbani, commemorating Prophet Abraham’s great act of faith many centuries ago. Almighty God put Abraham to a most difficult trial, the details of which are described in the Qur’an. During this day, men, women, and children are expected to dress in their finest clothing. For the millions at Hajj, it is a big day. On this day, the pilgrims reach the grounds of Mina where they sacrifice an animal. It was here that Abraham is believed to have sacrificed his son Ishmael. The pilgrims then shave their heads.

The charitable instincts of the Muslim community are demonstrated during Eid ul-Adha by the concerted effort to see that no impoverished Muslim is left without sacrificial food during this day. Coming immediately after the Day of Arafat (when Prophet Muhammad pronounced the final seal on the religion of Islam), Eid ul-Adha gives concrete realization to what the Muslim community ethic means in practice.

Barzakh - A reminder

Posted by shiaonline on December 29, 2006

BARZAKH

One of the fearsome stages of the Hereafter is the grave, which calls out daily:

I am the abode of loneliness, I am the house of terror, I am the home of worms.

The darkness and loneliness, questioning by ‘Munkar and Nakeer’, Squeezing in the grave (Fishar), and the chastisement in hell are some of the frightful stages. Hence it is necessary for man to take lessons from a dead man’s state, and reflect upon it, because one day he himself will have to pass through these stages.

The following is narrated from Imam Ali as.gif

O the servants of Allah! The state in the grave of a person whose sins are not forgiven is more horrifying than death itself. Fear its (grave’s) narrowness, its squeezing, its imprisonment, and its loneliness. Verily the grave calls out daily: I am the house of loneliness, of terror and worms. Grave is like a garden of Paradise for a good doer, while it is like a dungeon of hell for the evil doer. Allah tells His enemies that He will send ninety-nine serpents in their graves, who will tear their flesh and smash their bones, and this punishment will continue till the outbreak of Qiyamat. If one of the serpents exhales towards this earth, all plants and trees will be destroyed. O servants of Allah! Your souls are tender, and your bodies delicate, you cannot confront any ordinary serpent of this world, how then will you face them. ”

What is Barzakh

One of the dreaded stages of the Hereafter is ‘Barzakh’. ‘Barzakh’ literally means a curtain or a separator that lies between two things and does not allow them to meet each other.

But Barzakh in this context means that Allah has placed a curtain between this world and the hereafter. Imam Ja’far-as-Sadiq (a.s.) says,

“By Allah! I fear a lot for your state in Barzakh.”

The narrator asked Imam (a.s.) as to what was Barzakh? Imam Sadiq (a.s.) replied that, it is a period starting from death till Qiyamat.

Various Chastisements in Barzakh

The traditions herein are taken from the book Hayat al Qulub Vol. 2, where the Meraj of Holy Prophet (saw) is discussed.

It is recommended that readers use their imagination while reading these traditions to actually feel their intensity and pain.

One who consumes Haraam (forbidden) food

I (Holy Prophet (saw)) came to a company seated at tables loaded with the delicious foods and with the most rotten flesh. However they were eating only from the rotten flesh without tasting what was delicious. Who are these? I inquired. Gibraeel said, They are those that eat forbidden things in preference to that which is lawful, and to your sect they belong.

Backbiters

Holy Prophet (saw) said: I saw a group of people that had lips like camel (large in size), and angels cut the flesh off their sides with scissors and threw it in their mouths, forcing them to eat it. At my inquiry, Gibraeel said, these ridiculed/backbited believers and sought out their faults.

Those who take the wealth of the orphan and the usurers

Holy Prophet (saw) said: Next I saw a group of people into whose mouths angels were pouring fire and it was coming out of thie rear-ends. They had unrighteously consumed the property of orphans.

Then I passed a crowd of people who could not rise on account of their large stomachs. These were usurers.

Adultery

Passing hence, I saw a party of women suspended by their bosoms. These had committed adultery, and palmed their illicit offspring upon their husbands and secured them an inheritance in their husbands’ property.

Neglecting Namaz

I saw another group of people whose skulls were being crushed with rocks and whose brains were flowing out. I asked, Who are these people? Gibraeel said, These are the people who would go to sleep without having prayed Salat al Isha.

Imam Baqir as.gifsaid: On the night of ascension Holy Prophet (saw) passed a company suspended by their feet on hooks of fire, because when the Most High had made them rich in lawful things, they desired what was unlawful.

Imam Baqir as.gifsaid: Another company were having their mouths sewed up with needles and threads of fire because they had accused virgins.

It is related from Imam Taqi as.gifthat Ali as.gifand Lady Fatima (sa) one day visited the prophet and found him weeping profusely. May my father and mother be your sacrifice! Said Ali as.gif; what is the cause if your grief, O Prophet of Allah?

He (saw) replied, On the night I was carried to the heaven I saw a number of the women of my sect in great torment and it is for them I weep. I saw a woman suspended by her hair, and her brain was boiling from excessive heat. Another was suspended by her tongue and liquid flowing from the fountain of melted copper in hell was poured down her throat! And another was hung up by her breasts. I saw a woman eating the flesh of her own body, which fell from her, and fire meanwhile was flaming under her. I saw a woman bound hand and foot and assailed on all sides by serpents and scorpions. Another, blind, deaf and dumb, was incased in a coffin of fire, and her grain was dropping out at her nostrils, and her body was falling into pieces from gangrene and leprosy. I saw a woman suspended by her feet in a furnace of fire, the flesh of another was being cut off on all sides with scissors of fire. I saw a woman whose face and hands were burning, and who ate her own entrails, I saw a woman with the head of a hog and the body and the body of a donkey, tormented in a million ways. I saw a woman in the form of a dog, and fire was poured through her body, issuing her mouth, and the angels were beating her with the rod of fire.

Fatima (sa) exclaimed, what they had done that they had been Allah the Almighty inflicted them with such horrible torments.

The Prophet replied, the woman suspended by hair did not conceal it from the view of men. The one suspended by her tongue, tormented her husband with that member. The one hung up by her breasts would not acknowledge her husband’s conjugal rights. She suspended by her feet, was in the habit of gadding abroad without her husband’s consent. The one that ate her own flesh, adorned her person for the view of those who had no right to see her. The woman bound hand and foot, neglected to wash herself and cleanse her garments. She did not perform the necessary and obligatory ablutions, and held prayer (namaz) of light account. The one blind, deaf and dumb, bore children form adulterous intercourse, and caused her husband to bear the burden of their support. She whose flesh was cut off with the fiery scissors, showed herself to incite men to desire her. The woman who was burning and ate her own entrails, was a procuress, and brought together wicked men and women together. She with the head of a hog was a slanderer and liar; and the one in the form of a dog was a professed singer, mourner, and envier, whose practice was to excite discontent under the providence of Allah. Woe, said the prophet, to the woman that angers her husband, and happy she that contents him.

From the book - Journey to the Unseen World.

Here onwards narrations are taken from the book Journey to the Unseen World written by Ayatullah Najafi Quchani.

1. I saw monkey-like creatures who, I realised were actually humans for they had no tails nor hair and walked on two legs. Pus and blood emitted from their private parts accompanied by a bad stink. “This is the land of Lust and Desire,” Haadi said, “These people were adulterers.

2. Next, I saw people resembling animals hanging from posts and their private parts had been nailed to the posts with big iron nails. Some were also being whipped and were screaming in pain. Haadi informed me that these people used to indulge in various forbidden sexual pleasures.

3. Ahead of us was another Land of Desire. Here were people who used to be heavy eaters. Those who used to overeat their food obtained by lawful means, had faces like donkeys and cows. Those who had obtained their food by unlawful means had faces of pigs and bears with huge bellies and thin legs! They were being severely punished. It was as if their bellies were full of fire.

4. On the way we saw various animals fighting with each other viciously, some even eating the flesh of the dead bodies. They were extremely thirsty and flames emerged from their mouth and ears. These are the back-biters and their audience, liars, fault finders and those who laughed and made fun of the faithful.”

5. After some time, we reached the land of Greed and Avarice. There we saw people with faces like dogs fighting among themselves. Some were eating dead bodies and fire was coming out from their behinds. Haadi informed me, “These people used to take bribes and embezzle or steal wealth belonging to orphans.”

The conditions of the Grave, the punishment meted out to the sinners for their wrong deeds, the fate of pride, and good deeds going waste due to certain sins, all these are occasions for awakening and reflection. One should try to prepare and stock deeds for the future because death is inevitable and it closes the door of action forever. If we fail to do good deeds our selves it is indeed foolishness to expect that our children will act on our behalf after our death.

We can only expect those deeds which we have managed to do, to come to our rescue and help, and cannot be certain of anything else.

These conditions describe the sufferings to be borne in Barzakh. The Day of Judgment will be even more severe and harsh.

May Allah help every body to atone and do good

All Praise is for Allah

Peace be upon Mohammed (saw) and his Progeny

The Glorious Quran Chapter 2 Verse 207

And among men there is who sells himself (soul ) seeking the pleasure of God; and verily, God is affectionate unto His (faithful) servants.

It is held unanimous by the Scholars of the two Islamic schools, that this verse was revealed for Imam Ali ( as ), when he readily slept in the bed of the Prophet ( pbuh&f ) , when the latter to thewill of God had to migrate from Mecca to Medina. The one who would agree to offer himself instead of the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) who was wanted by the enemy must essentially have

  • The safety of the Prophet ( pbuh&f ) preferred to his own safety
  • Implicit faith in the duty of a man to earn the pleasure of the Almighty Allah and His Prophet Muhammad ( pbuh&f ), at any cost, even at the cost of his own life
  • The courage of surrendering himself willingly with the utmost peace of mind, to sleep under the swords, ready to fall upon him
  • The confidence and faith in God’s protection

And on the night of Hijrah, Allah the glorious revealed to Jibrail and Mikail I have established brotherhood between you two and have ordained the life of one longer than the life of the other. Now, are you willing to make a present of the extra length of life to the other?

But each prefered the longer life for himself. Then Allah revealed

Why not follow the example of Ali ibn Abu Talib. I have established brotherhood between him and Muhammad (pbuh&f). He is now sleeping on the bed of Muhammad in order to save his life by sacrificing his own. Now descend both of you to the earth and protect him from his enemies.

Both the angels descended. Jibrail took up his position near Ali’s head and Mikail near his feet.Jibrail was crying out aloud Excellent. Excellent. O son of Abu Talib! There is none like you. Allahis making boast of you before the angels.

And it was on this very occasion that the above verse was revealed.

Glorious Quran Chapter II - Verse 269

He grant the wisdom to whomsoever He will, and he who have been granted wisdom hath been given abundant good; and none shall mind it save those endowed with wisdom.

In the above verse the word “Wisdom” implies the best knowledge seeking to act with fullness and soundness of one’s own conscience. True knowledge is spiritual illumination or divine guidance worked through the grace of God as and when the necessity occurs. This being the active result of the constant seeking for it by those who obtained nearness to the All mighty!

It is held by many Sunni scholars, that this verse was revealed for Imam Ali ( as ). It is not surprising that, such a unique gift ( of being granted wisdom ) is inspiration (Ilhaam) which is conferred upon the purified ones.

Glorious Quran Chapter 3 Verse 61

And unto him who dispute with thee therein after the knowledge hath come unto thee, Say! ( O’ Our Apostle Muhammad!) (Unto them) come ye, let us summon our sons, and (ye summon) your sons, and (we summon) our women and (ye) your women, and (we summon) ourselves and then let us invoke the curse of God on the liars!

This verse refers to the famous event of ‘ Mubahala ‘ which took place in the year 10 A.H against the Christians of Najran. A deputation of 60 Christians of Najran headed by Abdul Masih their chief monk priest came and discussed with the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) the personality of Hazrat Isa ( as ). The Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) told them not to deify Jesus for he was only a mortal created by God, and not God Himself. Then they asked who the father of Jesus was. By this, they thought that since he was born without a father the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) would helplessly accept Jesus’ father being God himself. In reply to this question was revealed the Verse.

Verily, similitude of Jesus with God is as the similitude of Adam; He created him out of dust then said He unto him BE, and he became.

When the Christians did not agree to this line of reasoning, then this verse was revealed enjoining upon the Prophet (pbuh&f ) to call the Christians to Mubahala. To this the Christians agreed and they wanted to return to their place and would have the Mubahala the next day.

Early next morning the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) sent Salman al Faresi ( May Allah be well pleased with him ) to the open place, fixed outside the city for the historic event, to erect a small shelter for himself and those he intended to take along with him for the contest. On the opposite side appeared the Christian priests, while at the appointed hour the Christians witnessed the Holy Prophet (pbuh&f ) entering the field with Imam Hussain ( as ) in his lap, Imam Hasan ( as ) holding his finger, and walking beside him, Lady Fatima ( as ) and followed by Imam Ali al Murtaza ( as ). The Prophet ( as ) on reaching the appointed spot stationed himself with his daughter, her two sons and her husband, raising his hands towards the heaven said: Lord these are the People of my House

The Chief Monk on knowing that the baby in the lap of the Prophet (pbuh&f) was his young grandson, Imam Hussain (as), the child walking holding the Prophet’s ( pbuh&f ) hand was his first grandson, Imam Hasan ( as ), the Lady behind him was daughter, his only surviving issue was Fatima ( as ) the mother of the two children and the one who followed the Lady was his son in law, the husband of Fatima ( as ), addressed the huge crowd of the people who had gathered on the spot, and addressed them saying

By God, I see the faces which, if they pray to God for mountains to move from their places, the mountains will immediately move!

O believers in the Jesus of Nazareth, I will tell you the truth that should ye fail to enter into some agreement with Muhammad and if these souls whom Muhammad has brought with him, curse you, ye will be wiped out of existence to the last day of the life of the earth!

The people readily agreed to the advice counseled by their Leader. They beseeched the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) to give up the idea of the agreed Mubahala and requested for themselves to be allowed to continue their faith, offering to pay ‘ Jizya ‘.

  • Al Tabari, Commentary of the Quran, v 2 p 192 -> 193
This historic event of a unique triumph of Islam is taken by the Shias as a religious thanksgiving festival of the triumph against falsehood.

More references from Sunni books:

  • Ghayatul Maryam, p 300
  • Sahih Muslim, v 4 p 1285 ( English Edition), the tradition is as follows:
…( The third occasion is this ) when the following verse was revealed : Let us summon our children and your children. Allah’s messenger (pbuh&f) called Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Hussain and said : O Allah, these are my family …

Glorious Quran Chapter 3 Verse 103

And hold ye fast by the cord of God All together and be not divided ( among yourselves ) …

Some Sunni scholars and commentators agree that the above verse reflects on the Ahl al Bayt. Here are some references:

  • Thalabi records on his Commentary Tafsir al Kabir from Aban ibn Tabligh that he heard Imam Jafer as Sadiq ( as ) say:
We are the Rope of Allah about whom Allah has said: Hold fast to the Rope of Allah …
  • Shafi’i is reported by Abu Bakr ibn Shabah al Din in Rishfaht al Sadi to have said:

When I saw People carried off
Their departure to the sea of error and ignorance
In the name of Allah I boarded the ship of Salvation
That is the Ahl al Bayt of Mustafa, the Seal of Prophecy
And I caught hold of the Rope of Allah, that is their Love
As He commanded us to hold fast to the Rope!

    A tradition from the Holy prophet ( pbuh&f )

I will soon be called away and will have to depart from you, but I leave among you Two ( 2 ) weighty things, the Book of Allah and my descendants. The Book of Allah is like a rope which extends from the heavens to the earth, and my descendants are my people of the house ( my Ahl al Bayt ). The Subtle and the Aware tells me that the two ( 2 ) shall never part company until they come to me at the Pool. So take care how you treat them after me.

Forgiveness in Islam

Posted by shiaonline on December 29, 2006

Forgiveness in Islam

In many verses while using different modes of expression, the Holy Qur’an has recommended moral issues to us and praised the prophets for possessing such merits as patience, adherence to promises, forgiveness, modesty and good manners.

Forgiveness is an attribute which has received due attention in Islam and which has been extensively discussed in the Holy Qur’an, and hadiths (Islamic traditions).

The forgiveness desired by Islam is that we forgive when we have the power to take revenge

Forgiveness signifies overlooking the offence and sin of a person who has purposefully or mistakenly done you wrong, such as insulting you by his words, beating you up or exacting your property. Ignoring all these issues and not committing this wrong is called “forgiveness”.

Forgiveness is of two types:

  1. We forgive someone when we are unable to take vengeance. This kind of pardon is, in fact, tantamount to patience and forbearance and not to forgiveness. In other words, it is a kind of helplessness and debility, a kind of tolerance.
  2. We forgive someone when we have the power to take revenge. The forgiveness desired by Islam and its leaders relates to his kind.

In the Holy Qur’an Allah has proclaimed the following:

  1. “Turn to forgiveness and enjoin good and turn aside from the ignorant (7:199)”.
  2. “And if a false imputation from the Shaitan afflict you, seek refuge in Allah; surely He is Hearing, Knowing (7:200)”.
  3. “Those who spend (benevolently) in ease as well as in straightness, and those who restrain (their) anger and pardon men; and Allah loves the doers of good (to others) (3:!34).”

With more deliberation into the meaning of the divine verses, we realize that Allah Almighty enjoins on His prophets pardon and connivance.

Allah recommends him to observe good behaviour while guiding the people, and keeps him away from getting involved with ignorant elements. To make His “Messenger” completely successful, Allah warns him against paying heed to satanic temptations, which are the biggest barrier before man in performing good deeds. To save His messenger, Allah commands him to seek refuge in Him.

It becomes evident that granting pardon to an oppressor and abstaining from taking vengeance are not so simple tasks. Man needs a greater spiritual power with which to kill his carnal desires and sense of vengeance, and to grant “Pardon” while he has the ability to take revenge. For this reason, Allah Almighty introduces “the restraint of anger” as one of the attribute pertains to people who suppress their anger and forgive others.

Hence Allah Almighty command:

“Thus it is due to mercy from Allah that you deal with them gently, and had you been rough, hardhearted, they would certainly have dispersed from around you; pardon them therefore and ask pardon, for them, and take counsel with them in the affair: so when you have decided, then place your trust in Allah; surely Allah loves those who trust (3:159)”.

This Holy verse has been revealed about few Muslims who violated the Holy prophet’s order in the Battle of Uhud thus leading to the defeat of the Moslems.

People expected the Holy Prophet to strongly punish those violators; however, the following holy verse was revealed:

“…forgive them therefore and ask forgiveness for them, and take counsel with them in the affair … (3:159)”

In addition to calling on people to forgive, our religious leaders have always been the eminent pardoners in the world, and barring them, no one is capable of such an extent of forgiveness.

  1. The Messenger of Allah said: “The best deed before Allah is to pardon a person who has wronged you , to show affection for relatives who have broken ties with you, and to act generously towards a person who has deprived you “. Thereafter he recited the following holy verses:

“Turn to forgiveness and enjoin good and turn aside from ignorant (7; 199) “.

  1. Imam Ali (A.S), Commander of the Faithful, in his testament addressed to Malik el Ashtar stated:

“Fill your heart to the brim with mercy, kindness, and affection towards your subjects. Never act like a voracious ‘animal’ towards them, availing yourself of tearing them apart, for they are your brothers-in faith or your equals in creation. So grant them the same degree of pardon and forgiveness that you hope Allah will grant you, for, you are above them, and he who appointed you is above you and Allah is above him who gave you this position”.

  1. The Imam also said:
    1. “The most deserving person to pardon others is the one who is most powerful in punishing others”.
    2. “Subdue your anger and forgive a guilty person while you are in power”.
    3. “When you gain power over the enemy, consider forgiving him as a sign of your gratitude for your power”.

Imam Ja’far as-Sadeq (A.S) stated: “Pardoning others while one is in authority is consistent with policy of the Prophets and the abstemious”.

Examples of Remission

In the battle of Siffin, Moawieh, the son of Abu Sufyan, prevented the flow of water and thus did not allow the troops of Imam Ali to drink. Imam Ali (A.S) delivered a lecture following which his troops seized the source of water from the army of Moawieh, and drove it to the desert. The companions of the Imam said: “Let us now deny them access to the water, so that they would die of thirst and there would be no need to do battle with them. Imam Ali (A.S) noted: “By Allah, I will do no such thing. I deem my sword sufficient for achieving my ends”. He then ordered them to reopen the flow of water on Moawieh’s army, so that, it too can meet its needs.

It must be noted that remission has been recommended, as the personal right of every Muslim, upon being with authority, should forgive those who oppress him and trample upon his rights. He should not think of taking revenge, so the grudges and animosities could be uprooted in the world and the forbearing person, too, could receive a good reward from the Lord of the worlds.

As far as the rights of the society are concerned, “remission” results in the escalation of corruption and appearance of chaos. At such a time, social security will be jeopardised and the property, life and reputation of the people would remain immune from the aggression of the corrupt and wicked persons. For this reason, Islam has attached more importance to carrying out religious penance than to granting “remission”.

Imam Mohammad Baqer (AS) has noted: “Allah Almighty has not left out anything whatsoever that His servants might need until the day of Resurrection, except that He has revealed it in a book and expressed it to His prophet. He has maintained a “limit” for everything and brought proof for it. For those who exceed the bou
