Our Mission:

The word ‘Salman’ is derived from the word ‘As-Salaam’. Salaam means peace and is one of the attributive names of God. When the word Salaam is used for human beings, it literally means soundness of body and soul which is obtained through special spiritual and intellectual help which is given to the Prophets and faithful followers of God. The vision of is captured in its motto: “Towards the Inner Vision of the Truth” and is beautifully amplified in the following prayer:

O God! O our Master! You are eternal life and everlasting peace by Your essence and attributes. The everlasting peace is from You and it returns to You. O our Sustainer! Grant us the life of true peace and usher us into the abode of peace. O Glorious and Bounteous One! You are blessed and sublime.

Qur’anic Treasures

The Holy Qur’an was revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and is a universal book of guidance for Muslims. Learning the Holy Qur’an is a duty upon all Muslims according to the following Hadith of the Holy Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)1:

“Uthman reported Allah’s messenger as saying, “The best among you is he who learns and teaches the Qur’an.

The following Hadith of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encourages Muslims to recite the Holy Qur’an2:

In order to learn the Holy Qur’an, it is important to know Arabic language. As this is a limitation for a large number of Muslims, I have compiled sound clips of selected Surah (Chapters) and Aya (verses) and their transliteration and translation. I have also provided some additional supporting information for some of these items.

Qur’anic treasures will enable us:

  1. To develop an understanding of major concepts presented in the Holy Qur’an;
  2. To apply these concepts to solve current problems; and
  3. To become ethical and Allah-conscious at all times.

Zikr & Tasbi: Divine Remembrance

Every day, we face many material, spiritual and intellectual difficulties. The path of religion teaches that the most certain way to overcome these difficulties is through abundant prayers and Divine Remembrance. This approach creates courage, strength, inspiration and pure intention in one’s being. In Khutba 226 (p.193) Nahjul Balagha: Sermons, letters and saying of Hazrat Ali (a.s.), published by Tahrike Tarsile Quran, New York, 1981), Hazrat Ali (a.s.) has described the rewards of Divine Remembrance as follows:

“Verily God has given His Remembrance the honour and prestige of bring Divine Light to human minds. With its help those who are deaf to reasoning will be able to hear and understand His Orders; those who were blind to realities and truth will see and realize the good that religion teaches and those who were behaving like enemies of God will become obedient and submissive.”

Let us recite these prayers for the purification and upliftment of our souls. May these exercises lead to the dawning of light (Noor) in our souls. Ameen.

Research Bulletins

The Holy Quran teaches that the sequence in acquiring complete knowledge starts from the outer world and extends into the inner world of human beings:

“We shall show them Our portents on the horizons and within themselves (in their souls) until it will be manifest unto them that it is the Truth. Doth not thy Lord suffice, since He is Witness over all things?” (41:53). (1)

Recent advances in science has led to a greater understanding of the processes in the material world. According to the above verse, humans have to prepare for discovering the signs of Almighty within their own souls.

Personal Pradhramani Preparation Resources for the Murids of the Holy Imam

Ya Ali Madad and Didar Mubarak! Here is an excerpt from Lecture 15, Be In The World But Not of the World, from the book titled Life and Lectures of the Grand Missionary Al-Muayyad-Fid-Din Al-Shirazi (page 109):

“O momins, may God make you from amongst those whose guardian is God in this world and the world to come and with whose devotion to Him he is much pleased.

You must bear in mind that you are made of a thick earthly body and a fine heavenly spirit. Your earthly body needs earthly nutrition to sustain its earthly existence and your spirit needs spiritual food to continue its spiritual life. The earth is the storehouse of the material nutrition consisting of food and water for the body and the Prophets and the Imams are the storehouses of sciences which supply nutrition to the spirit which is the most precious stuff.

O momins, take from the Imam the food for your next life. It will save your spirit from pollution and will qualify you with the attributes of the angels.”

The preparation for didar of NOOR Mowlana Hazir Imam is done individually and collectively. With Mowla’s immense grace and taid, the following resources were prepared for the Canadian Pradhamani who took place in June 2005. I hope that these resources will be useful to all murids who are preparing for the Holy Didar of NOOR Mowlana Hazir Imam in the near future.

A Poem on Salwat:

Ya Allah, Ya Muhammad, Ya Ali O Brothers and Sisters, do not rest,
Till all of us pass the test,
For Salwat is ours,
To be recited every hour.

When the salwat poses,
It becomes the staff of Moses.
Let the baraka of Allah, Muhammad and Ali flow,
And see the true believers glow.

Let love and consciousness grow,
And see negativity hit a new low,
For darkness disappears,
When the Sun appears.

External and Internal Signs Of God

The following ayat of the Holy Qur’an teaches us that God shows His signs externally in the universe and internally in the soul:

“Soon will We show them our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things? ” (Yusufali, 041.053)

This implies that barakat of the Holy Didar is experienced at physical (zaheri), spiritual (ruhani) and luminous (noorani) levels. Therefore, it is important to discover the treasures that are hidden in the soul from the barakat of the Holy Didar. In order to do this, we have to do a lot of dhikr so that the inner voice gets a chance to express itself. Therefore, we are undertaking a 40-day didar gratitude prayer card project to soften our souls and hear their expressions.

Didar Gratitude Prayer Cards

It is very easy to lose the momentum of the Holy Didar after the Holy Imam’s departure from one’s country. However, it is important to offer utmost gratitude for the Holy Imam’s visit to our country. Therefore, we are undertaking a 40-day project to thank the Holy Imam with our hearts and souls, prepare for the Golden Jubilee Didars across the world, and also extend our prayers of well wishing to the Noorani family, the global Ismaili Muslim community, the Muslim Ummah, humanity at large, for all departed souls and for the salvation of all the souls in the Universe. The second objective of this project is to encourage a large number of people to call on God to extend peace on Earth and for the salvation of countless millions of souls. I have taken an Ismaili Muslim viewpoint in developing these prayer cards and am solely responsible for this project. Participation is voluntary.

The 40-day Period

The motivation for this 40-day project is the following hadith of the Holy Prophet: “Whoever worships God sincerely for 40 days, God opens his heart, expands his chest and loosens his tongue to speak with wisdom even though he may be very weak in speaking and understanding.” (Ahadith-i Mathnawi, p. 196). The current project will start on Monday, June 20, 2005 and end on Friday, August 12, 2005. There will be five postings per week for a period of 8 weeks.

Satisfaction of Heart

“The single remedy for every kind of false fear, every kind of perplexity, inferiority complex, worldly greed, embarrassment, torment of bad or disturbing thoughts, sadness, restlessness, disappointment, unwanted anger, indignity, slip of tongue, lack of courage, malice, pride, vanity, ignorance, negligence, laziness, meanness, uneasiness, oblivion, obtuseness, mental confusion and other such ethical and spiritual diseases, is the satisfaction of heart which is attained from the blessings of Divine remembrance as is said in verse (13:28): “Verily in the remembrance of God do the hearts find satisfaction (gradually).” It should be remembered that, from the remembrance of God, the hearts find satisfaction gradually. Since the hearts are in different ranks, therefore, from the beginning to the end, the satisfaction depends on the knowledge and good deeds of each individual.” [Source: Spiritual Healing, p. 11]

Ta’wil Postings on the Subject of Imâm and Imâmat for the 47th Imâmat Day Celebration Imam and Imamat

In his firman to Surat Jamat on 12th October, 1903, NOOR Mowlânâ Sultân Muhammad Shâh (a.s.) said “If you always read religious books, you will come to know that the throne of Imamat is continuous, perpetual and everlasting.” Therefore, the subjects of Imam and Imamat are of paramount importance for all believers of God.

The verse (36:12) reveals that God has encompassed everything – intellectual, spiritual and physical – in the light of the most noble Imam. Therefore, according to the principles of Qur’anic wisdom, it is clear that all subjects are contained in the subject of Imâmat and all words in the word Imâm. [Source: Recognition of Imam (Imâm – Shinâsi) Part I & II]

Project Description

In order to prepare for the 47th anniversary of our beloved NOOR Mowlânâ Shâh Karim Al-Hussaini’s (a.s.) accession to the masnat of Imamat, it is necessary to understand the principles of Imâm and Imâmat from a Qur’anic point of view. The goal of this project is to create awareness of these principles and increase our knowledge. Therefore, let us seek luminous (noorani) and spiritual (ruhani) help (ta’id) to understand the tawil of Qur’anic words or ayats pertaining to Imâm and Imâmat, and then recite a bouquet of salwats to strengthen our knowledge (ilm) and faith (iman). I have taken an Ismaili Muslim viewpoint in developing these ta’wil postings and am solely responsible for this project. Participation is voluntary and/or by invitation.

Posting No. 1: Seek Enlightenment and Set an Example
Date: December 19, 2003

Ya Ali Madad! Let us first reflect on the following excerpt from the Platinum Jubilee Message of Imam NOOR Mowlana Shah Sultan Muhammad Shah (a.s.)1:

“In these 70 years of my Imamat, man’s material condition has totally changed. There has been immense increase in power over nature but, as we see, with strifes everywhere spiritual power has not increased. It is my hope that my Spiritual Children, the Ismailis, will, by the example of their own higher enlightenment and helpful cooperative movements amongst themselves, set to the world an example of better fraternity and brotherhood which alone can free men from the fear and dangers of moral and mental discord which leads to disaster for all.”

The above message was delivered 50 years ago. In the 47 years of his Imamat, our beloved Imam NOOR Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Husayni’s voluminous activities clearly show that we have made great progress. The AKDN is now a global organization and Ismailis have created a greater awareness of their own spirituality. However, to set example, perhaps, we should also consider following advice of Pir Shihabu’d-din Shah Al-Husayni2:

” Thus, with the help of God, in labour and worship, in the struggle with your own evil impulses, with the spiritual knowledge kept alive in your heart, with certainty in reason, with study and the acquisition of a religious education, with the vision of the saints of God and of their example in the heart, by the discharge of your duties, you will attain a high degree of spiritual refinement, as it has been systematically explained. If you do all this, you may attain the degree which you seek. You have to seek it, and it depends upon Him not to leave you without a chance. “

May our beloved Imam NOOR Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Husayni grant you, your family, your Jamat and the worldwide Jamat luminous (noorani) and spiritual (ruhani) ta’id (help) to advance materially, spiritually and intellectually, and may He grant you the inner vision of the Truth. Ameen.

Peace, light, barakat and taid,
Noorallah Juma

Holy Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of Arab and Islamic calendar. Fasting is prescribed for this month according to the following verse of the Holy Qur’an:

“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same) number of other days. Allah desires for you ease; He desires not hardship for you; and (He desires) that ye should complete the period, and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that peradventure ye may be thankful.” Picktall 2:185

Teachings of Imam NOOR Mowlana Shah Mustansir bi’l-laah II (a.s.)
In Pir Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi, Imam NOOR Mowlana Shah Mustansir bi’l-laah II (a.s.) teaches us about external and internal ablutions and fasts, and enlightenment:

  1. External and Internal Ablutions
“The ablution of the head means to keep oneself obedient to the Imam. The ablution of the hand is swearing allegiance (bay’at dadan) to the Imam of the time. The ablution of the foot is to advance along Imam’s way in obedience to him. The ablution of the heart is to keep steady in affection for the Imam. The ablution of the tongue is to keep on continually remembering (dhikr) the Imam. The ablution of the eye is to have the chance of the didar of the Imam of the time.” (page 61)

  2. Fasting as a Lifestyle
“The whole year you must fast, just as ordinary Muslims (zahiriyan) fast for one month. The meaning of this fast is austerity. Control yourselves, keep yourselves away from bad qualities, evil and indecent actions and devilish acts, so that the mirror of your hearts may be gradually polished. …—you must be patient, persevering in austerities, and keeping your inner self fasting as long as you live.” (page 59-60)

  3. Fasts for Inner Self
“Here we specify the parts of the fast of the inner self: the fast of the head means to treat one’s own head with the same humility as the feet of other people, casting out from one’s head the lust of superiority, greatness and pride, because greatness and superiority are only suitable to the all-great substance of the Truth (Haqq), who is eternal, the King of the Authority. The fasting of the eye means that one must keep away coveting looks from the women who are not lawful to one. The fasting of the ear means that one should abstain from listening to slander. The fasting of the tongue means that one should keep one’s tongue from uttering abuse or slander. The fasting of the heart means to keep the heart free from doubt. The fasting of the foot is to hold one’s foot back from a wrong step. The fasting of the hand is to keep all one’s limbs away from treachery so that they may not do evil. This especially applies to one’s tongue which must be kept from uttering lies. And there is no greater lie than the denial of (the existence of) the Imam, saying that he has disappeared.” (page 59-60)

  4. Preparing for the Eternal Life
” Therefore, O believers, if you want to be alive in both worlds, perfect your faith, because (only) by the light of faith may you attain eternal life. And faith comes from and is perfected by the recognition and knowledge (ma’rifat wa shinakht) of the Imam of the time, and obedience and love for his followers. Therefore, follow your Imam, and be happy and united with each other amongst yourselves in order that you may be alive in both worlds, and in the hereafter you may become resurrected with the pious, with prophets and saints in the presence of the Imam, with the greatest joy at meeting each other again. ” (Pages 4-5)
